CAKES

Being the second most photographed part of your wedding it makes perfect sense to hire a professional to customise your chosen cake with your colour scheme for the wedding, if the colours are neutral, it may be apt to match the bridesmaid dress with the cake. (This is just an idea!!)

•  The rich fruit cake that everyone really deems as a traditional wedding cake has evolved over many centuries. At the beginning (whenever that was) a lighter fruited cake, "the bride cake", was made for the bride's engagement and what is now known as the wedding cake, used to be known as the "groom's cake". The groom would then give this cake to the guests and by sharing the cake with them, he was also asking them to share his hopes for prosperity and good luck. (Quite thoughtful really!)

•  Your cake can be ordered well in advance, but should definitely be ordered six months before the wedding so that colour schemes and timing is perfect!!

•  You will need to give the caterer details of the number of guests who are coming to your wedding so they know how big it needs to be if it's the dessert, and if its not the dessert at the reception, it can be just one tier. The colour of your dress, the bridesmaid's dress colour and the colour of the flowers (if there are to be flower decorations on the cake)

•  As it normally goes, a deposit will be payable when ordering your cake. Most confectioners will deliver and set up your cake for a small charge, which ensures your peace of mind on the day.

•  No-one is really sure where the tradition of keeping the top tier of a wedding cake (to use as a christening cake) came from. If you want to keep a tier of your cake, place the cake (uncut) in the original white cardboard box that it was delivered to you in, and cover it with the lid. If you keep it somewhere cool it will keep for years, plenty of time for trying for a baby!! But do not put the cake in an air tight container or freeze it though as the cake won't be able to breathe and will go out of date!!
